This is an excellent introduction to the Underground Railroad that includes a 20 page lesson plan with 15 actual worksheet lessons for students. The bulk of the lessons are discovering the symbols used by runaway slaves to freedom. Each symbol is placed on one page with 4 to a page to create an interesting graphic. Students choose their own colors to create patterns and designs for each of the 12 symbols.

The symbols are graphic in nature so they make excellent 2 dimensional design templates. Teachers can take all the finished art and create a quilt design by taping all the student work together to form one large piece of art, or a quilt style design. This makes for great art for the school or classroom. This lesson teaches a student to see patterns and to control color within a decorative fashion while learning and appreciating American history.
